Music and Mobile Computing for iOS

This workshop explores the potential for music creation, performance, and experience on increasingly pervasive mobile computing platforms, such as smartphones and tablet computers. In-depth technical instruction on audio application development for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad devices, will be complemented by group discussion of aesthetic and design considerations in mobile computing. The workshop will be focused on an individual project for each participant, taking a mobile musical application/experience/artwork/etc. from conception and design to implementation and iteration.

Topics of the workshop include:
- real-time audio processing in iOS
- conceptual and technical differences between mobile and traditional computing
- musical instrument design
- design and implementation issues of multi-touch user interfaces
- basic computer graphics as needed

Required equipment:
Access to Apple Macintosh computer with Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7.

Optional equipment:
iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad)
(Instructors have a limited number of iOS devices available to checkout for the duration of the course if necessary)

Prerequisites:
Some demonstrable programming experience (e.g. having taken an introductory programming class).
